What are trigger points
Trigger Point Injections are used for chronic pain relief. When hearing the words “trigger point injection” many people become daunted by the verbiage, but it truly is a simple solution. Trigger points are also known as muscle knots, which are small knots that form in your muscles or the fascia tissue (a thin casing of connective tissue that surrounds and holds every organ, blood vessel, bone, nerve fiber and muscle in place) leading to pain caused by muscle irritation. Have you ever worked out really hard and felt your body in knots the next day? Well, trigger points may be the reason why!
What causes trigger points
Trigger points can arise from your daily activities such as a strenuous workout, sleeping in the wrong position or from simply being too stressed. Typically with ice, rest, and a good massage; trigger points can be alleviated. However, when you have tried all the steps above and are still burdened down with pain, trigger point injections could be a great solution for you. Aside from daily activities, trigger points can also be caused or exacerbated by:
- Trauma
- Overuse
- Sports injuries
- Myofascial Pain Syndrome (a disorder in which pressure on sensitive points in the muscles causes pain in seemingly unrelated body parts. The syndrome often happens after repeated injury or muscle overuse.)
Types of trigger points
There are three types of trigger points: active, passive, and satellite. Active trigger points are painful when touched and can cause pain in other areas of the body. Passive trigger points are not always painful when touched but may cause pain in other areas of the body. Satellite trigger points are similar to active ones but are not as painful.
Trigger points can occur anywhere in the body but are most common in the neck, shoulders, back, and hips. Everyone may get them, although some individuals get a greater amount or have more discomfort from them. This is why Trigger Point Injections are a great option for body pain relief.
How to alleviate trigger points by injections
Some trigger points may be massaged out or go away on their own, but for others a simple trigger point injection will solve the problem. Trigger point injections are treatments designed to relieve pain caused by trigger points. The most common ingredient in our injections is lidocaine which numbs the pain and allows the muscles to relax. Come into one of our offices today and learn more!
